Zambian president bans campaign rallies to stem Covid-19 spread

  • Zambia has banned campaign rallies ahead of elections scheduled for August.
  • The country has recorded more than 93 000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, with more than 1 200 deaths.
  • A leader of the opposition party said his party would go ahead with its campaign rallies.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Wednesday banned campaign rallies ahead of elections scheduled for 12 August, saying large gatherings risked spreading the Covid-19 virus.

Lungu, a lawyer, is pitted against economist Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development (UPND), whom he narrowly beat in the 2016 elections.

Zambia, Africa’s no.2 copper producer, is the grips of an economic crisis after it failed to make payment of a coupon on one of its dollar bonds in November, dragging it into sovereign default.

Andhra govt to bear Rs 1.5 cr treatment cost for COVID positive doctor

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 5 (ANI): The Andhra Pradesh government will bear the cost of treatment amounting to Rs 1.5 crore of a doctor named N Bhaskar Rao who tested positive for COVID-19.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced that the government will bear the cost of treatment amounting to Rs 1.5 crore for Government Doctor N. Bhaskar Rao, who has been battling for his life at Care hospitals, Gachibowli, informed an official release on Saturday.
Dr. N. Bhaskar Rao, 38, working as a medical officer in Public Healthcare Centre (PHC), Karamchedu of Prakasam district has got tested positive for COVID and his wife Dr. Bhagya Laxmi, 38, working as Assistant professor, radio diagnosis in Guntur Medical College also tested positive for COVID. Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi tests positive for Covid-19

  • Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi presented with mild symptoms before a Covid-19 test.
  • Mokgethi was one of the first people to receive the J&J vaccine, under the Sisonke Programme in Gauteng. 
  • Last week, Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced the province had officially entered the third wave.

Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently in self-isolation, the provincial government confirmed.

In a statement, it said Mokgethi presented with mild symptoms before a Covid-19 test on Tuesday.

She received the vaccine in February.

“All persons who were in contact with her have been advised to self-isolate and test, if necessary. The Health MEC was one of the first people to receive the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, under the Sisonke Programme in Gauteng. The Covid-19 vaccine prevents severe illness, hospitalisation and death.”
