Covid-19: Third wave could be less severe – health department tells Parliament

  • It’s unclear when a third Covid-19 wave is expected to hit South Africa.
  • However, health Minister Zweli Mkhize has told Parliament that increased infections in the Northern Cape, North West and Free State are being closely monitored.
  • The health department’s director-general, Sandile Buthelezi, believes delaying the start of the third wave provides more time for vaccinations.

In the absence of a new Covid-19 variant, South Africans can expect the peak of a possible third wave of infections to be lower than what was seen during the second wave.

Although the timing of the third wave remains uncertain, the health department predicts that hospital admissions will be less for all age groups.

According to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the department plans to vaccinate as many citizens as possible before the expected third wave hits.

During a briefing to Parliament’s health committee on Wednesday, Mkhize told MPs that officials specifically monitored infections

Covid-19 vaccine rollout for ages 12 to 15 is ‘better than expected,’ health officials say

“As we’ve seen this new age category, from 12 to 15, it’s brought renewed hope. Many of the people who I know that work the various vaccine clinics, they’ve told me it felt like December when we were giving those first shots,” Costello told CNN on Tuesday. “People are so hopeful.”

“In less than one week, we have vaccinated more than 600,000 12- to 15-year-olds,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House briefing on Tuesday.

About 3.5 million children ages 12 to 17 have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine so far, according to the latest CDC data.

Walensky said that her own son was one of them.

‘A pretty brisk demand’

Both CVS and Walgreens pharmacies confirmed to CNN via email on Tuesday that their retail outlets are continuing to vaccinate adolescents ages 12 to 15, but neither company provided data on how many
